The pharmaceutical ethacrynic acid belongs to the group of drugs known as loop diuretics. This medicine works by preventing the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions in the kidney's loop of Henle. This action hinders the reabsorption of water, increasing urine output and ultimately causing the body to expel extra fluid. Ethacrynic acid is used medically to treat oedema brought on by congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions such nephrotic syndrome.
